This part-time course takes place over a 6-week period via Zoom (six sessions in total). Participants can take part in discussions and ask questions, and there will be two hours of independent activities to complete per week.

It is designed to support teachers new to New Zealand understand the broad structure and key policy documents which inform the New Zealand education system. There will also be a focus on the pedagogical practices essential for the success of teaching and learning in a bi-cultural New Zealand context and in classrooms with diverse student needs.

The course seeks to prepare teachers to understand how to access resources and enact these practices in the New Zealand classroom. It offers participants the opportunity to learn about and discuss the New Zealand education system, associated school structures, and classroom environments. The programme will examine the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and how they apply in an education context, while growing knowledge and understanding of the New Zealand Curriculum

By completing this course, teachers will gain insight into the collaborative nature of teaching and learning in an innovative learning environment, engage in evidence-informed Teaching as Inquiry, and develop skills for quality teaching using the Deliberate Acts of Teaching (DATs) and Assessment for Learning (AFL) documents mandated by the New Zealand government. They will learn how effective Culturally Responsive Practices (CRP) can positively influence the achievement of students and engage with inclusive education practices including those for English Language learners.
