Information for boards of state and state-integrated schools

The Auditor-General, by law (the Public Audit Act 2001), appoints the auditors of all state and state-integrated schools. Please note that the Board is not able to seek its own auditor.

Over the next few months, we will begin the process of appointment of school auditors for 2024 to 2026, and send schools and their Boards of Trustees more information as we go.

Please note that the 2023 audits are not affected – this process is for the 2024-2026 audits.

As soon as possible:  If your current auditor advises you that they don’t want to continue as the auditor of your school, please tell us.  If they advise you or us that they don’t want to continue, we’ll make alternative arrangements and advise you when we write to you in May (see below).  If you want a change of auditor, you will have to write to us and tell us why.

May 2024: We’ll write to you with information about the audit arrangements that we are making for your school.  If you haven’t received that letter by mid-June, please tell us.  If your school has exceptional circumstances not covered by that letter, please tell us.

June-July 2024: We’ll instruct auditors to assess how much work (time and cost) it will take to audit your school.  We’ll review that information for consistency and reasonableness, and ask them to then give you a fee proposal for the 2024-2026 audits.

Boards of Trustees should make themselves aware of, and engage with as required, the various stages of this process.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.
