Voting is well under way in elections for the Teaching Council Board.

Image not foundTeachers from across the education system can choose who will represent them on their professional body.

Teachers and principals from the primary and secondary sectors, teachers and leaders from early childhood education, and teacher educators will each select a candidate.

“These elections are very significant,” says Teaching Council interim Chief Executive Lesley Hoskin.

“The Teaching Council is doing important work with, and on behalf of, teachers, and their input in choosing a Board is essential.

“During the new Board’s three-year term we will continue to advocate on behalf of teachers to raise the status of the profession and to support excellence in teaching, initial teacher education and educational leadership.”

The single transferable vote system will be used and for most teachers voting will be online.

Each registered teacher and holder of a Limited Authority to Teach (LAT) will receive an email or letter with a unique access code and password – those who haven’t by now should contact Election Services at 0800 922 822 or info@electionservices.co.nz. Remember to check your junk and spam folders.

Voting closes at midday on 26 March. After the elections Education Minister Chris Hipkins will appoint a further six board members.

“Exercise your democratic right to make a difference – get online and vote for your Council!” says Lesley.
