National Library’s Aotearoa People’s Network Kaharoa (APNK) is enhancing secure eduroam Wi-Fi across all libraries they currently support so that domestic and visiting students can seamlessly connect to the internet when they go to the library.

Libraries

The global secure Wi-Fi for students – eduroam – is expanding to 166 public libraries across Aotearoa New Zealand, in partnership with the free secure internet service provided in public libraries by Aotearoa People’s Network Kaharoa (APNK).

"On top of APNK’s existing secure internet, eduroam (education roaming) securely connects users with their home institution credentials. It provides a seamless experience for ākonga, as devices connect automatically when they are in an eduroam coverage zone.

This is an initiative of the Ministry of Education and the Research Education Advanced Network New Zealand (REANNZ), alongside APNK.

Equitable access

The Ministry’s vision for ubiquitous and equitable digital access for students involves ensuring connectivity is available in school, at home, and in between – eduroam is a solution for the ‘in-between’ part of the puzzle.

Ākonga require access to the internet to help utilise learning resources and research, and this expansion helps to close the digital divide and make sure all students can access internet services securely at no charge and at more accessible locations.

While originally developed for tertiary students and staff roaming between institutions, eduroam is increasingly being adopted by secondary and primary schools globally.

The Ministry is currently working with schools to make eduroam accessible to more secondary students.
