Supporting Pacific children and young learners through series of dual-language resources.

A set of print and online resources in five Pacific languages – Gagana Sāmoa, Lea faka Tonga, Vagahau Niue, Te reo Kūki Āirani, Gagana Tokelau – and English is now available.

The resources are designed to support early language and literacy learning of Pacific new entrants and early years students in English-medium classrooms. They also support teachers to work in partnership with families, utilising the strengths they bring from their first language.

The resources are complemented by the Pasifika Early Literacy Project (PELP), which promotes the development of reciprocal partnerships between home and school and is delivered to support the use of the dual language resources.

If your primary school would like to participate in PELP, phone Angie Enoka on 04 463 1506 or email angie.enoka@education.govt.nz. PELP has limited places available and there is no cost to the school for participating.

The dual language resources can be ordered free of charge from the Ministry’s Down the Back of the Chair catalogue(external link) or contact us here(external link) or free phone 0800 660 662 or from the Ministry’s Te Kete Ipurangi (TKI) web platform.

The Pasifika Dual Language Resources won the Pacific Service Excellence category in the SunPix Pacific Peoples Awards.
