The Refugee Orientation Centre Trust is looking for a registered secondary teacher to oversee and guide our Catch Up programme, which provides refugee-background secondary students in Hamilton with a space to get support with their homework, revision, and study.
This is a paid position, and the programme is funded by the Ministry of Education. Students and their families don't pay fees to attend; it is free for all former refugee students to enrol.
The programme runs on Mondays at St. John's College from 3:30-5:30pm and on Fridays at Wintec City Campus from 3:15-5:15pm.
Your role would be to oversee and guide the team, which includes four staff and several volunteers, in supporting approx. 15-20 former refugee students at each session with their homework, exam study, assignments, or other needs that arise. You will need a good understanding of the NCEA curriculum overall, but you will not be alone in delivering support. You would also ideally have some experience working with former refugee or ethnic youth, or with ELL students. Ideal candidates would be good with teaching numeracy, but this is not essential.
If you're unsure if you fit the bill, please do apply anyway and we can have a discussion with you about the programme. We are also happy to negotiate the payment of registration fees with successful applicants.
