We invite you to register for the 47th National Youth Jazz Competition!

The Tauranga Jazz Society are very excited to be staging the 47th National Youth Jazz Competition from Monday 7 to Wednesday 9 April 2025.

We have more trophies than ever – there are best in competition trophies for both Big Bands and Combos ,cash prizes and bronze, silver and gold awards.

On-stage workshops for all bands, evening workshop and jam, an auditioned National Youth Jazz Competition Big Band to perform at the prizegiving, plus a special evening concert.

When: Monday 7 April–9 April 2025

Where: Baycourt Community and Arts Centre, 38 Durham Street, Tauranga.

Big Band

Medium swing jazz standard featuring saxes on the head, brass on the bridge, plus a solo for tenor and full ensemble shout chorus.

Competition rules: The National Youth Jazz Competition rules have been changed for 2025. The changes are:

The maximum number of players in a Combo is now 9 (previously 8).

Each Combo performing in the Combo section plays 4 pieces (the set piece plus 3 others) with a maximum playing time of 20 minutes.

The 2 Big Band Judges are Lana Law and Lance Philips.

The 2 Combo Judges are Ben Wilcock and Eilish Wilson.

2025 National Youth Jazz Competition Big Band

Tauranga Jazz Society's goal is to assemble a Big Band of some of the most outstanding young jazz musicians in Aotearoa. The repertoire the band performs will be selected to reflect this standard and will be challenging for every musician involved.

Your school does not have to have a group in the competition for your students to be eligible to audition for this ensemble.
