Write to Read: Teaching Writing to senior-primary, target students

Professional development (PD) New Zealand (nationwide)

Posted: 05 August 2024
Notice reference #: 1HAhbG

This course will prepare teachers to work effectively with older students who still struggle with foundational literacy skills, including spelling, decoding, handwriting, and writing in sentences. We will target writing skills as a first priority, in the knowledge that this will support reading development too. The recommended lessons are highly structured, during which students will have many opportunities to practise handwriting, spelling, and sentence structure skills. They will then apply these skills to create texts to use for their reading practice. Each lesson has been designed to remove barriers for students who have struggled in the past, and to build these students' confidence and motivation to write. All attendees will receive a term's planning, and other key resources necessary to implement the programme effectively.

This is a new 'Writing Teacher' course. It would be useful for middle and senior school teachers, teacher-leaders, LSCs, RTLits and RTLBs.

I am a teacher, researcher, and professional learning facilitator, with 20 years' experience working in New Zealand schools. All my my methods are grounded in empirical research. They are also practical and fun.
