Obligations when advertising teacher or principal vacancies
State and state-integrated schools/kura and early childhood education/kōhanga reo centres have certain obligations when advertising teacher or principal vacancies. These help ensure the impartial selection of suitably qualified people.
Your obligations are set out in collective employment agreements and legislation, and specify:
- which positions must be advertised and how
- the minimum time vacancies must be advertised for
- position types or position changes that don’t need advertising
- which pre-employment screening tests must be carried out.

The Ministry of Education and New Zealand School Trustees Association (NZSTA) websites have information about how to recruit and appoint staff.
