Morningside School Northland

Scale A teacher – SLA Programme

  • Full-time
  • Permanent

About the role

Help tamariki build strong foundations in literacy and grow in confidence as readers and writers.

Morningside School, Whangārei, is seeking a skilled, relational kaiako to deliver the Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA) small-group teaching. This scale A role involves working with targeted groups of learners from across the school.

We are looking for a teacher with a strong understanding of structured literacy who can identify learners’ strengths and next steps, deliver explicit, systematic teaching, and use assessment to monitor progress and adapt instruction. You will work closely with classroom teachers to connect targeted support with classroom literacy programmes.

Strong relationships and a belief in every learner’s potential are essential. You will create a welcoming, predictable learning environment, combining high expectations with patient, responsive support. We value calm, trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming practice that strengthens belonging, engagement and independence.

The successful applicant will bring:

  • knowledge of structured literacy and effective early literacy teaching
  • confidence using assessment to plan teaching and monitor progress
  • the ability to deliver focused, purposeful small-group instruction
  • strong communication, organisation and collaborative skills
  • a commitment to culturally sustaining practice, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and partnerships with whānau.

Experience with BSLA, particularly delivering small-group support in a similar role, would be an advantage.

Our vision, Whakamana Akoranga – Empowering Learning, and values of Whakaute, Māhirahira, Hiranga and Whanaungatanga guide our work.

If you bring warmth, purposeful teaching and a commitment to helping tamariki experience literacy success, we would welcome your application.
