Science Teacher Mentor

  • Full-time
  • Contract (29 May 2027 to 29 May 2028)
  • Comprehensive package including accommodation, flights, insurance, utilities and a monthly living allowance.

About the role

As a Science Teacher Mentor with Arawa Secondary School in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, you will play a key role in strengthening science education and helping students gain the knowledge and practical skills needed for future study and employment. The school is committed to improving the quality of science teaching and increasing opportunities for hands on learning. This assignment focuses on building the capability of local teachers to deliver engaging and effective science education.

Working alongside science teachers and school leaders, you will provide mentoring, coaching, and professional development support to enhance teaching practices and increase confidence in delivering science subjects. You will help teachers develop practical, student-centred learning approaches that encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and active participation in the classroom.

A significant aspect of the role involves supporting the establishment and effective use of science laboratories and practical learning spaces. You will work with staff to strengthen laboratory management, improve safety procedures, and develop resources that enable students to participate in meaningful scientific investigations and experiments. By sharing your knowledge and experience, you will help create sustainable systems that can continue to benefit the school long after the assignment has ended.

This is a collaborative capacity building role rather than a traditional teaching position. Success will be measured by the skills, confidence, and capability developed within the local teaching team. You will work closely with colleagues to identify priorities, share best practices, and support ongoing improvements across the science programme.

Based in Arawa for 12 months, the assignment offers the opportunity to experience the rich culture, natural beauty, and welcoming communities of Bougainville while making a meaningful contribution to education. Supported by Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) and Arawa Secondary School, you will help empower teachers and inspire students through high-quality science education.
