Te Kamo High School Northland

Guidance Counsellor

  • Full-time
  • Permanent
  • Suitable for beginning teachers

About the role

Te Kamo High School is a well-resourced, co-educational secondary school in Whāngarei of approximately 800 students. Grounded in whānaungatanga (respectful relationships), whakapono (trust and integrity), and aroha (compassion and respect), we inspire our ākonga to pursue tūmanako—becoming the best versions of themselves both academically and personally.

We are seeking a dedicated, empathetic School Counsellor to join our Student Support Centre (SSC) and pastoral care team, supporting student wellbeing across Years 9–13. Working collaboratively with the Leader of the SSC, Iwi Deans, and Whānau Teachers, you will provide essential guidance that empowers learners, builds resilience, and fosters personal growth.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver professional, confidential counselling services to students, staff, and whānau.
  • Collaborate with external mental health providers, community agencies, and iwi/hapū organisations to enhance wrap-around support.
  • Actively contribute to our pastoral care network and Iwi/whānau system.
  • Work in a culturally responsive manner upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership, tikanga Māori, and bi-cultural practices.
  • Coordinate guidance initiatives and safety plans for vulnerable students.

Qualifications and attributes

  • Recognised counselling qualification (essential).
  • Current NZAC membership or eligibility (strongly preferred).
  • NZ Teacher Registration (preferable, but not required).
  • Strong relational skills, cross-cultural competence, and a commitment to learner agency and restorative practice.

If you are an educator or practitioner who embodies manaakitanga, thrives in a collaborative team, and holds high expectations for our young people, we welcome your application.
