Akaroa Area School Canterbury

Primary Homeroom Teacher, 0.8 FTE

  • Permanent
  • 0.8 FTTE

About the role

Come and teach somewhere a little different!

Akaroa Area School is a small rural school in the heart of stunning Banks Peninsula. With small class sizes, strong community support and an exceptional local environment, we offer a rewarding place to teach, connect and make a genuine difference.

With one of our valued primary teachers retiring, we are seeking a dedicated and passionate New Zealand-registered teacher to join our team from the beginning of 2027. This is a permanent 0.8 FTTE position in our Phase 2 classroom, Te Pihinga.

We are looking for someone with strengths in structured literacy and mathematics, along with strong primary curriculum knowledge. Experience teaching in multi-level NZ classrooms would be an advantage.

Life in a small school is varied, so you will need to be well planned, organised, adaptable and willing to get involved. You will be a reliable and collaborative team member who builds strong relationships with ākonga, colleagues and whānau. A good sense of humour definitely helps too!

Our values shape our programmes and practice. As an Enviroschool, we place a strong emphasis on kaitiakitanga, sustainability and learning through our unique local environment. We also deeply value our connections with tangata whenua and the opportunities these relationships provide to strengthen identity, culture, local curriculum and connection to place.

Akaroa offers an enviable harbourside lifestyle, a strong sense of community and easy access to the outdoors, while still being around an hour from Christchurch. A subsidised schoolhouse may also be available!

If you are looking for a change of pace, great work–life balance and the opportunity to be part of a close-knit school and community, we would love to hear from you.
