About the role

Mā te huruhuru ka rere te manu | Adorn the bird with feathers so that it may fly.

Are you a passionate, registered educator looking for a truly rewarding role that transforms lives? Do you believe that every young parent deserves a bright future and a supportive, non-judgmental environment to reach their highest potential?

Hiwa-i-te-rangi Teen Parent Unit

Hiwa-i-te-rangi Teen Parent Unit is on the lookout for an extraordinary Kaiako (0.6 FTE) to join our supportive, award-winning whānau. Named after the star of the Matariki cluster that holds our hopes and aspirations, our unit provides a vibrant, wrap-around secondary education for young māmā, dādā, and parents-to-be aged 24 and under.

We walk alongside our students as they balance the demands of school and raising the next generation. With an on-site childcare center (Kowhai Corner), door-to-door transport, and full-time catering, we remove the barriers so our students can focus on learning.

About the role

In this part-time space, you will create a strengths-based, highly individualised learning environment. Our small class sizes allow you to focus deeply on student goals, mentoring them toward NCEA Levels 1–3, University Entrance, and pathways beyond secondary school.

While we welcome applications from all learning areas, an ability or willingness to teach English, Maths, Social Studies is an advantage.

Who we are looking for

A registered professional: You must hold a current New Zealand Teaching Practising Certificate.

Relationship-driven: You anchor your practice in aroha, manaakitanga, and whanaungatanga. You easily build strong, trust-based connections with youth.

Culturally responsive: You have a sound understanding of tikanga Māori and a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi in action.

Flexible and innovative: You excel at adapting curriculum delivery to meet unique student situations, celebrating milestones along the way.

Empathetic and empowering: You view young parents through a lens of potential, not statistics, fostering self-belief and independence.
