We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced teacher to join us as our Head of Specialist Education, leading our Turangawaewae Unit (2MU, 1MMA). This role is a full-time, permanent position to start in Term 1, 2022.

The successful applicant will have demonstrable knowledge, experience, and skills in supporting young people with severe and challenging behaviours. You will be able to translate specialist knowledge into practical information, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with young people and their families, educators, and other specialists across a diverse range of settings.

You must be a registered teacher and have relevant special education qualifications and/or experience. Other skills required to lead the unit include:

  • the ability to plan and manage time effectively to meet goals and objectives.
  • possess strong documentation and systems skills.
  • manage budgets and funding requirements as per MOE guidelines.
  • experience in leading a team of specialist educators and staff.
  • knowledge of the curriculum in schools and understanding of inclusive education practices.
  • co-ordinate service provision in a multi-agency, trans-disciplinary setting.
  • sensitivity to cultural and ethnic diversity and commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
