Qualified teacher

An experienced, qualified and innovative teacher is required to work with adolescent youth in a residential setting. The role contributes to the professional leadership of the team in classroom practice and pedagogy during the school year.

The residential home at Templeton operates 24–7 providing a therapeutic residential programme for up to 8 youth (ages 12–17 years). Barnardos are responsible for the youth’s daily care, liaison with therapists, provision of education and residential programmes and ensuring their environment is safe and supportive.

 Duties:

• Provide quality education for youth in ways that are integrated and consistent with clinical and residential systems/methods 
• Support the teaching team to deliver a curriculum that reflects current approaches to effective teaching and learning
• Plan implement and evaluate learning programmes collaboratively with clinical and residential teams
• Take responsibility for pedagogical leadership 
• Demonstrate a commitment to tangata whenuatanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership in the learning environment
• Engage families/whānau in youth's learning.

Skills and experience:

• Teaching qualification recognised by the Teaching Council of Aotearoa NZ 
• Current Teaching Council practising certificate
• Teaching experience, ideally working with challenging children/youth or those with learning difficulties, socially at risk or with disruptive behaviours
• Sound understanding of pedagogical practice
• Self-motivation with high quality planning and organisational skills
• Experience in leading adults, including mentor/coaching
• Full clean NZ drivers licence is required and a current first aid certificate is desirable.

As this position is covered under the Public Health Response (Vaccinations) Order 2021, a condition of employment is that staff are fully vaccinated.
