The Catlins Area School has a permanent, full-time deputy principal position starting at the beginning of 2022. The position will work across all year levels (1–13) in our area school. The successful applicant will:

  • Be approachable and focused with the ability to motivate and inspire 
  • Be an excellent communicator with the ability to develop positive relationships with our staff, students, whānau, and the wider community
  • Be a collaborative team player with strong self-awareness, who is adaptive and solution-focused
  • Inspire students and staff to be the best they can be at all times and promote excellence in all aspects of school life
  • Have experience in working with and connecting students and whānau to outside agencies in order to ensure that appropriate supports are available and provided
  • Be committed to and experienced in culturally responsive and relational teaching approaches that promote Māori succeeding as Māori in order to enhance ākonga mana, and be able to support other staff to improve their capability in this area
  • Have experience in the implementation and use of school-wide pastoral care that has included positive behaviour for learning (PB4L) and restorative practices
  • Be committed to professional growth and be able to support the professional growth of other adult learners
  • Understand the culture and special character of an area school and be excited about the opportunity of being part of our Y1–13 area school learning community.

The Catlins Area School is located in the community-centred town of Owaka, the gateway to The Catlins. Owaka is a twenty-minute drive from Balclutha, and an hour and twenty minutes from Dunedin. A schoolhouse may be available on request.
