Te Kura is New Zealand's largest school providing a wide range of personalised learning programmes from early childhood to NCEA Level 3, including young adult and adult learners. We have a vacancy for a kaiako matua (senior teacher) in the social sciences Rōpū. The successful applicant will be part of a collaborative leadership team guiding and supporting innovative and inclusive curriculum design in the social sciences. We are seeking expertise in history up to and including NCEA Level 3, social studies, and Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories. The role is responsible for learning design that connects to ākonga interests, builds strong social reasoning skills, and promotes social action. 

Our focus is on engaging ākonga in learning that is relevant to them in their context and provides choices for the future. We are looking for a kaiako matua who is passionate about supporting ākonga to think and act like social scientists, who is innovative, creative and responsive to the needs of individuals and groups of ākonga when designing learning, and who is excited at the opportunity to work in an environment where learning is highly personalised and flexible.

The successful applicant will have: 

  • experience in developing understanding of the past to make sense of the present
  • experience in developing social reasoning and promoting social action in a range of contexts
  • practical experience in effective assessment for learning
  • up-to-date curriculum knowledge, including national curriculum refresh and Review of Achievement Standards
  • a commitment to ongoing professional learning and personal growth.

The ability to provide mātauranga Māori leadership and to support the development of Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories within the Social Sciences rōpū is desirable.
