When I ask the kids in my school what they are looking for in a teacher, the answer almost always comes back as someone who is kind. Then I probe a little more about what they mean by kind and we go a bit deeper. They want someone who cares about them, every day, even when they are having a bad day. They want someone who knows they are having a bad day and will help to make it a bit better.
They want someone who can make learning fun and fun doesn't mean easy. It means that even if the learning is hard, that the teacher can make it fun for you so it is easier to understand. They don't want someone who makes you feel bad if you get it wrong.
They want someone who can have a laugh with them. Someone who knows that funny things can happen in the classroom even when they're not supposed to.
They want someone who can even be strict sometimes, so long as it is fair, because in their words, 'sometimes we need rules'.
They want someone real. Someone who makes mistakes, who doesn't think they are perfect. Someone who doesn't have to be the boss all the time, someone who knows they can learn from kids as well as teaching them.
So as a Principal, what do I want?
I want what the kids want. If you have the attributes that my kids have identified as being important, then I would love to talk to you about working at Avalon School.
I encourage you to visit if you can to allow the kids to work their magic on you.
