Primary objective:

Using the NCEA Education for Sustainability and Enterprise standards as a framework to deliver, assess and evaluate student-led action in social and regenerative enterprise for a better future.


Papa Taiao Earthcare is a young values-based social enterprise with the vision of enabling ecological and community regeneration through enterprise. In 2015 Papa Taiao piloted our first programme in Te Hiku/Northland. We now deliver in 6 regions across Aotearoa New Zealand. We are looking for someone to strengthen and build capacity and resilience in our Moana Restoration programme in Te Hiku.
On the Moana programme ākonga in the Far North have led sustainable enterprises in marine and terrestrial biosecurity, underwater drones, marine pest to product organic fertilisers, rongoa balms, fur recovery, trapping, fencing, oyster farming and trap building. Student-led ecological actions have included protecting inanga spawning sites, re-seeding paua and kutai (mussel) beds, trapping and tree planting.

Papa Taiao ākonga from Te Hiku have won an unprecedented four National Excellence Awards in the Young Enterprise Scheme in the past 3 years.

To ensure every young person who wishes to design and construct a better future through learning for sustainability has the opportunity to do so.

Papa Taiao process: 

  • Match a taiohi’s passion to a local issue 
  • Work with local experts, hapu or community groups to understand the problems that lead to the issues
  • Spark a sense of personal responsibility
  • Give taiohi an opportunity to brainstorm potential solutions based on good information
  • Trial and test the solutions
  • Give taiohi support and mentorship to design a successful enterprise or project based on their ideas
  • Involve supporters within the community
  • Support taiohi gain NCEA qualifications and, 
  • Enable taiohi to make and keep a few dollars out of their enterprise.
