We seek a collaborative leader for a teaching principal role. This person must have a strong commitment to understanding and embodying the Tamariki school special character values. Our school provides play-based, child-led education for 60 children in Y1–8,  and prioritises social and emotional growth. An essential component of being part of our school is using our democratic meeting system, to which the principal is subject like everyone else.

Our new principal will:

  • Display a passion for the maintenance and preservation of the special character of our school
  • Model and actively promote our school special character, eg be willing to play with the students, tolerate a messy environment and be comfortable that the students and the principal have the same voting rights when making school rules
  • Lead the implementation of curriculum through quality teaching aligned to a learner-centred, play-based approach
  • Demonstrate experience and confidence in relating to and working with children of all ages in a child-led environment reflective of the Tamariki school special character
  • Accept that the social and emotional growth of the children takes precedence over their academic success and discipline consequences
  • Take an iterative approach to their own social and emotional development
  • Represent and advocate for the school on the Board, Society and relevant professional bodies
  • Maintain strong communication and healthy relationships with all members of the school community
  • Actively promote and honour the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

The qualities our community has said they want in their new principal are:

  • Playfulness, empathy, kindness
  • Is a strong communicator and active listener
  • A deep-seated knowledge of child development and an embedded trust and respect for a child’s inner drive for development
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong, positive working relationships with students and wider community.

Position will commence 27 January 2021.
