The purpose of The Mind Lab is to encourage the development of conceptual understanding of contemporary digital, scientific and technical theories and practices in education.

The MTEL qualification provides potential teachers and leaders from discipline areas identified by current market needs with a registrable work-based initial teacher education qualification. The qualification employs collaborative and culturally responsive strategies to develop exceptional teachers and inspirational leaders who work towards making social change in their schools and communities. In partnership with Ako Mātātupu/Teach First NZ.

The Hoe Ākau:

  • Is a curriculum specialist role responsible for developing and providing a programme of mentoring for MTEL participants focused on best practice
  • Has oversight of a programme of mentoring that is specific to their region, and inclusive of innovative pedagogical approaches that best responds to their local community
  • Must provide a programme of mentoring that supports participants’ development towards meeting the learning outcomes of MTEL meeting the graduating teacher standards, and/or the standards for the teaching profession (with support), and attaining provisional certification
  • Must be a fully registered teacher
  • Demonstrate commitment to tangata whenuatanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership in Aotearoa NZ
  • Use inquiry, collaborative problem-solving and professional learning to improve professional capability and impact on the learning and achievement of participant and their learners
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships and behaviours focused on the learning and wellbeing of each participant
  • Develop a culture that’s focused on learning, professional development, best practice.

Specific activities: 

  • Observe participants in curriculum specialty area and provide verbal and written feedback on effective teaching and pedagogy. Face-to-face and through video observations
  • Work collaboratively with in-school mentors to develop effective development programmes for participants.
  • Facilitate TMC with in-school mentors and participants.
