The assessment and moderation business unit is responsible for the quality assurance of internal assessment that takes place in schools and tertiary providers for credit towards national certificates.

The role of the team leader is to ensure that the internal assessment for qualifications is highly credible and consistent with the national standard.

In this role, you will:

  • Oversee the moderation of internally assessed standards for several subjects
  • Provide leadership and advice to a large team of staff and contractors
  • Ensure the quality of assessment resources
  • Manage a portfolio of responsibilities for the business unit
  • Provide advice and guidance on assessment and quality of internal assessment. 

You will also have an opportunity to be involved in the review of achievement standards.

The role requires skills and experience in:

  • Management of people in a high-performing team environment
  • Thorough knowledge of moderation services and national quality assurance processes
  • National or regional credibility as an educational professional and assessment expertise
  • Ability to manage policies and procedures in a changing and ambiguous environment
  • A high level of analytical skills with experience in business intelligence, and
  • Excellent communication skills combined with a high level of political acumen.

You must understand the principles of standards-based assessment and have a working knowledge of the New Zealand Curriculum, the New Zealand Qualifications Framework and the NCEA.

You must have recognised teaching and assessment expertise in New Zealand. You should also have recent experience with moderation of assessment judgements in a school setting.

This is a permanent role based in the NZQA national office in Wellington.
