Āwhina, Te Herenga Waka Marae invites applications for the position of Kaiarawhiti (Māori outreach and transition advisors) to join them.

The roles are varied and have a large community focus. The Kaiarawhiti will be responsible for implementing and participating in robust outreach programmes designed to provide the academic skills and pathways to motivate and encourage Rangatahi from Y9–13 to consider tertiary education.

Working with Kura Kaupapa and secondary schools to form positive relationships is a big part of this role. The Kaiarawhiti will work closely with the Kaiarawhiti Matua to ensure a smooth implementation of the outreach programmes both on and off campus.

You will have an understanding and ability to converse in te reo Māori and have excellent communication skills in both English and Māori, possess an excellent understanding of tikanga Māori, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and can participate in marae activities when required. The Kaiarawhiti must have proven experience teaching, facilitating, mentoring or similar. Additionally, you will require a collegial and collaborative approach and must demonstrate exceptional organisation and administration skills. In addition, can form excellent relationships with iwi hapū rangatahi and secondary schools. You will enjoy and be able to travel to provide the outreach programmes.

Āwhina is located within the office of the DVC Māori. The role of Āwhina is to provide cultural and academic support programmes to enhance the retention and achievement of Māori students studying at Victoria University of Wellington. In addition Āwhina provides a robust outreach programme designed to encourage and motivate Māori students to consider tertiary education as a career path.
