We are looking for a national assessment moderator: biology to join our Assessment and Moderation team on a 3 year fixed-term contract basis.

The role undertaken by a national assessment moderator is to:

  • Moderate standards that are sent in by schools
  • Complete a moderation report for that school
  • Develop exemplars
  • Update assessment documents for teachers.

The skills we are also looking for include:

  • Management of people in a high-performing team environment  
  • National or regional credibility as an educational professional
  • Close links with other biology teachers, e.g. a member of the Biology Educators of Aotearoa
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures.

NZQA is accountable for managing the New Zealand Qualifications Framework, administering the secondary school assessment system, independent quality assurance of non-university education providers, qualifications recognition and standard setting for some specified unit standards.   

NZQA has a te reo Māori bilingual goal 'Whakapakari' to be achieved in 2020.

This is an exciting and career-enhancing opportunity. You will have the opportunity to work with other moderators to ensure fair, valid and consistent assessment against national standards. You will also be required to write documents that are regularly published on our website.

You must understand the principles of standards-based assessment and have a working knowledge of the New Zealand Curriculum, the New Zealand Qualifications Framework and the NCEA.

You must have recognised teaching and assessment expertise in your subject/s in New Zealand and recent experience with moderation of assessment judgements in a school setting. You must also have recognised presence/involvement in the biology educators’ community.

NZQA may consider locations other than Wellington with a working from home agreement.
