Energetic, resourceful and organised person with expertise in current educational practices and curriculum content is sought to teach small classes (approximately 15 students) 4 consecutive days/week. He/she will be responsible for the welfare and teaching of students in the Y3–5 home class (mornings) and for the principal's release in Y6–8 (afternoons). This position requires planning, teaching and assessment in the following learning areas:
Y3–5 – literacy and maths
Y6–8 – integration across the curriculum: science, social science, technology, education for sustainability, health/PE, the arts.
A willingness to work collaboratively and contribute to the organisation of schoolwide events is essential. It would be an advantage to have skills in the teaching of basic te reo and capability in the use of IT.
The school is situated in northern Southland on SH6 and is widely known for its beautiful setting. A special feature of the school is its high level of parental involvement and students' active participation in community activities. It serves the rapidly developing town of Kingston (north) as well as the rural communities of Garston and Athol. It's less than an hour's drive to access all amenities at Queenstown or Frankton. South of Garston are the towns of Lumsden, Gore and Invercargill city.
Three teachers and a teacher aide meet the needs and abilities of the 35, Y1–8 students, through the provision of high-quality literacy and maths programmes. Communication and thinking skills are integrated into all aspects of school life.
As a Silver Medal Enviroschool, full use is made of extensive grounds and local resources. All students enjoy many opportunities for active learning through education for sustainability and EOTC programmes.
