Vacancy reference #: 1H9h7H

Inspire others and help improve the quality of mathematics education for trainee maths teachers across the East New Britain.

Papua New Guinea has a widespread low level of mathematics achievement which affects the numerical literacy needed for ongoing development of the country. Secondary school maths teachers need help improving mathematical fluency, reasoning and conceptual understanding to ensure they provide quality teaching upon graduation.

St. Peter Chanel Catholic College of Secondary Education, an innovative, new training institution, needs a volunteer to help it enhance its mathematics programme. They are after someone who has solid mathematics and secondary teaching skills and knowledge, and a great ability to relate to people from all walks of life.

As mathematics teaching adviser you will work collaboratively with staff to review current mathematics teaching practices, helping to improve instructional materials or resources and delivery strategies as needed. You will also provide mentoring to St Peter Chanel mathematics teaching staff to instruct and support trainee maths teachers to improve in their coursework. The role also involves an important community outreach component, where you will work with maths teachers from secondary schools in the province to help improve their teaching practices.

This is a 1-year assignment based in Kokopo, East New Britain.

We are looking for a volunteer with:

  • A degree level qualification in mathematics or a related subject
  • At least 3 years' experience teaching mathematics at secondary school level
  • Ability to provide mentoring and coaching support to colleagues.

VSA volunteers receive a living allowance and accommodation, insurance, and medical costs are provided. Travel arrangements are organised and funded by VSA along with other costs. We also cover the costs for partners who wish to accompany on assignments (6 months and longer).
