The Ministry of Education offers tuition fee scholarships to commence study in 2024 towards a Teaching English in Schools to Speakers of Other Languages (TESSOL) qualification. 

You're eligible to apply if you:

  • are a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand resident
  • work full-time or part-time in a state-funded school, or early childhood education service
  • are a New Zealand registered teacher in roles including:
    • Subject and class teachers
    • Teachers in bilingual and immersion settings
    • Specialist ESOL teachers
    • Members of the senior leadership team
    • SENCO
    • Learning support coordinators
    • RTLB
    • Early childhood educators.
  • currently teach new migrant, former refugee, Pacific background or international students in a state-funded school, or early childhood education service
  • have at least two years' teaching experience
  • have not received a TESSOL scholarship before. 

What the scholarship pays for

Scholarship recipients are funded for between two and five core papers, depending on the course. It includes course fees for each paper and $200 per year towards course-related costs (for 2 years).

The Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (PGCertTESOL)/ Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Teaching and Learning Languages)

University of Canterbury (Faculty of Education)

Papers in the above qualifications will contain practical assignments and will assist teachers to effectively cater for the needs of diverse English language learners in classroom programmes.
