Teacher aides can apply for MOE funding under the 'open category' to access the 2023-2024 PLD funding for this course.

This course is designed to guide teachers in their understanding of how mathematics is taught in Y1–8 in New Zealand.

The session will cover the different stages in mathematics linked to the curriculum, and the understanding at each stage in all the three domains of addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and proportions and ratios.

Investigating ways of teaching concepts that will support students to form a strong understanding will be a key focus.

At the completion of the course participants will:

  • Understand the stages and thought processes in all mathematics stages in curriculum levels 1–3 and in all three domains
  • Develop the knowledge to teach both place value and fractions to students at all year levels
  • Understand how to use the mathematics assessment data related to student achievement to inform further teaching and learning
  • Develop increased knowledge of the mathematics curriculum and pedagogical practices that can be used in the classroom.
