Mastering the Material World
An online course to build knowledge and confidence to teach primary school chemistry.
Looking at chemicals is core to the Material World strand of the NZ science curriculum, but what are chemicals and how do we use them to create the world around us?
This series of six 1.5 hour webinars will introduce you to the fundamental principles of chemistry such as the particle model of matter, collision theory of reactions, and thermochemistry. Guided by an experienced science outreach practitioner, you’ll use hands-on activities to build your confidence in developing and delivering lessons on the Material World strand. Attendees will come away with a deeper understanding of the Material World as well as a suite of resources and activities to support long-term lesson planning.
The course is structured as six 1.5 hour webinars held once a week over the course of a term. Teachers will carry out a short half-hour task before and after each webinar, provided by the course facilitator.
