All secondary school students are welcome to apply. 

The 5 components of the National Youth Jazz Competition are:

  • Big Band Competition
  • Combo Competition
  • Prizegiving
  • Concert
  • Youth Jams

The National Youth Jazz Competition is open to all secondary school students and is held at Baycourt Community and Arts Centre, Tauranga. 

Test pieces for 2022:

Combo section:

The song Unit Seven written by bassist Sam Jones and recorded by Cannonball Adderley Quintet.

The judges suggest using the original version as the first reference point but the band / musicians should pursue different approaches to the tune such as the following YouTube clip version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08rI4Wwh-AI

Focus on New Zealand compositions for 2022: 

This year we would like to encourage students to write original compositions and for music leaders to consider New Zealand compositions in their performance programme. To this end Head Judge, Rodger Fox, has made available Big Band charts of NZ composers including  Sir Dave Dobbyn, Six Sixty, LAB and others.
