Tamariki grow up surrounded by animals, be that real life animals or animals in storybooks, as soft toys, or images on clothing and even nappies. Animals make for a wonderfully meaningful teaching and learning platform with endless opportunities.

SPCA have very recently launched free online ‘Resources for Early Learning’, they are written by ECE kaiako for ECE kaiako and align to Te Whāriki.

These resources provide inspiring provocations, learning experiences and resources to support kaiako in nurturing exploration, curiosity and knowledge about animals, whilst encouraging feelings of empathy and acts of compassion.

The resources support tamariki in fostering social-emotional skills, develop their understanding of positive wellbeing and support them, as young ākonga, to see how they can make a positive difference in the lives of all living creatures, both human and non-human.
