Literacy in Science Workshop
What’s in a word? Improving the science vocabulary of Y9–10 scientists.
An exciting workshop that can provide easy to implement but proven literacy strategies for Y9–10 students in science.
This workshop can offer teachers of Y9–10 science an opportunity to engage in subject specific literacy strategies. This will enable our ākonga to improve their learning in junior science as they gain confidence in using both academic and science specific vocabulary and engaging with scientific text. There will be a variety of strategies shared and incorporated into the workshop for use in all junior science contexts (biology, chemistry and physics).
Literacy in Science is important to students as they then have the means to participate and communicate as responsible and informed members of society, particularly around science. It can also set them up with having the literacy skills to move into the senior sciences (biology, chemistry and physics).
This course spreads over 2 terms with approximately 5 weeks between sessions to provide opportunities for teachers to trial approaches and strategies, whilst also maintaining momentum. The course consists of:
- 1 half day face-to-face
- 1 90-minute online professional learning group (PLG)
- 1 half day face-to-face PLG.
