Teachers' Resource Kit for new NZ YA novel
An extensive Teachers' Resource Kit has been written by two secondary English, Drama and History teachers on the new novel, In Our Own Back Yard, by Anne Kayes, published by Bateman Books.
The resource kit includes varied and creative activities on setting, character, theme, style, language and visual literacy. It also includes research activities, Connections suggestions and essay topics. There are opportunities to have fun exploring the music, clothing styles, TV and films of 1981 in Aotearoa. There are also many activities that enable students to explore social justice issues, in particular, racism during the Springbok Tour of 1981 and gender inequality. Students are encouraged often to compare this period in Aotearoa to their present-day personal experiences and the current national and global political situations they face now.
The Teachers' Resource Kit can be found on https://www.annekayes.com/ in the 'Teachers' Notes' section. Unity Books offers discounts to schools for class sets of In Our Own Back Yard.
