Making Intercultural Connections Through Whakataukī
In this workshop, you will make intercultural connections through whakataukī. Te Whānau Maioha and the Centre for Languages teams at Future Learning Solutions have worked together to create a kete of resources, classroom tips, unit and lesson suggestions for language teachers looking for ideas to integrate Te Reo Māori, Mātauranga Māori and Te Ao Māori (Māori language, knowledge and world view) into their teaching programmes. These resources and teaching ideas are centred around a series of whakataukī which are presented in Te Reo Māori and the target languages of our classrooms. Normalising the use of Te Reo Māori in all classrooms is an important goal of many teachers and schools. Explicitly integrating Te Reo Māori into the language classroom also models the valuing of language and cultural diversity and encourages multilingual students to access their whole linguistic repertoire in their learning.
The resource package includes:
- Bilingual posters presenting whakataukī in Te Reo Māori and in the target language
- Bilingual formulaic expression posters using Te Reo Māori and the target language
- PowerPoints with activities to unpack and discuss the whakataukī in the classroom
- A booklet of suggestions for activities and lesson/unit plans using and further developing these resources.
These resources and ideas will be delivered in this workshop. Nō reira, nau mai, haere ki te whakawhiti kōrero, whakawhiti whakaaro. Therefore, we welcome you and invite you to enter into the spirit of exploring and discussing ideas.
