This workshop will explore:

  • The importance of daily oral language opportunities, sensory experiences and play
  • Effective ways of developing our children’s speaking, listening, thinking and questioning skills
  • How to develop literacy skills through an integrated, cross curricular, thematic and real- life approach: practical links between literacy and topic/inquiry/science, literacy and maths, literacy and the arts (role play, movement, visual arts)
  • The importance of foundation skills: memory, visual, auditory, gross motor and fine motor skills and continuing to build on these skills whilst delivering the primary school curriculum
  • The importance of providing opportunities for ‘making marks!’ celebrating the beginnings of writing
  • Sharing ideas for children’s writing and spelling experiences and different approaches we may have
  • Using the literacy progressions documents and the Supporting English Language Learning in Primary schools (SELLIPS), plus other useful resources and further reading
  • Visual resources, props and useful websites.
