12-week Learning Support and Disability Course for Teacher Aides

This is a comprehensive course designed to build teacher aide professional capability across a wide range of learning support and disability areas.

A key strength of the course is the linking of theory to everyday situations, with a focus on the development of easy to implement practical strategies for inclusive classroom settings.

Your role as a teacher aide is integral to the success of the ākonga you support.

Through the course, you will build knowledge, skills, confidence, and professional networks. The course balances professional learning with the practical know-how that participants bring.

Module overview 

Module one: Foundational 

A full-day workshop on child wellbeing, teamwork, learning and behaviour, and culturally responsive practice and disability.

Module two: Building your capability

You will then take part in an online webinar on Positive Behaviour Support. Then, choose any two of the following topics to explore more deeply through facilitated online courses.

Topics for 2021 are:

• Culturally responsive practice and disability
• Understanding conduct disorder
• Understanding positive behaviour support
• Understanding autism
• Understanding foetal alcohol spectrum disorder

Module three: Applying your learning

In this module, you focus on applying what you've learnt to your practice. It is a blended approach.

• One-hour webinar: an introduction to case study
• One-on-one coaching with your facilitator
• Develop a case study, with support
• Collaborative sharing of case studies in a face-to-face half-day session. 

This course is held in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. Intakes are limited to 20 participants and will fill quickly, so be sure to register as early as possible.

Cost: $1250 per person, plus GST

Teacher aides currently working in schools can apply to the Ministry of Education Teacher Aide PLD Pilot Fund to attend this course.
