Supporting Children's Healthy Emotional Development with PACE

Teaching children how to manage their emotions and develop a healthy view of themselves is one of the greatest skills we can teach them. Our presenter often works with adults who have learned to shut down uncomfortable emotions and, as such, have developed maladaptive coping strategies to protect themselves from these feelings. 

The relational framework known as Dyadic Developmental Practice, which has embedded within it a model known as PACE (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy) will be used as the basis for the strategies discussed.

In this 90 minute online seminar, Wednesday 25 November 7–8.30pm, with Registered Psychologist Veronica George, you will learn:

  • A way of interacting with children that helps them learn how to manage their emotions through a process of co-regulation. In this process, adults validate the emotional experiences of the child and also help to facilitate connection with the more vulnerable emotion they might be experiencing beneath any outbursts of behaviour. 
  • The importance of attachment relationships and the impact this has on development.
  • More about your own emotional triggers and how to use mindfulness practices to notice the thoughts and feelings that arise in response to children’s behaviour so that you can consciously choose how to respond, instead of react automatically. 
  • The importance of Relationship Repair and Self-Compassion when we stray from this way of engaging with children in our care and inevitably revert back to our old automatic responses. 
  • About the physiological responses children are experiencing when difficult emotions are aroused and how the PACE model physiologically helps the child return to a sense of calm.
