Get Outdoors Safely: With Maps!

Projects and programmes New Zealand (nationwide)

Notice reference #: 1HABQd

Every summer, kiwis traditionally head outdoors to explore Aotearoa. Are you and your whānau going to head in the outdoors this summer? Maybe you are heading into the hills and forests to walk or ride trails. You might be planning to climb a mountain, do a day walk in the bush, go mountain biking, fishing or paddle down a river. Have you thought about where you might go and what planning you need?

Get Outdoors Week encourages you to get out and about safely in New Zealand’s beautiful, but sometimes dangerous outdoor environment. An important part of staying safe is understanding where you are going and letting others know about your location. Mapping plays a key role in enabling you to stay safe and have fun when you go off the beaten track.

On this field trip, find out how maps help you plan your adventure, keep you safe in the outdoors, and assist organisations in finding you if something goes wrong.

During the field trip you will:

  • See smart technologies in use while driving on the road network
  • Locate the LEARNZ team each day of the field trip
  • Find your location using GPS on a mobile phone
  • Plan a trip in the outdoors with help from people at Mountain Safety Council
  • Go to the Rescue Coordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ) and see how it operates
  • Meet people from NZ Police Search and Rescue (SAR) and find out what they do to help those who run into trouble in the outdoors
  • Follow the fieldtrip on social media and online - see Shelley's tweets on twitter, follow the hashtag #learnztrips on Instagram, visit the LEARNZ field trip website.
