ONLINE: Number Talks and Building a Love of Maths, with Sarah Tohill

Professional development (PD) New Zealand (nationwide)

Posted: 23 July 2020
Notice reference #: 1HA9CZ

Number talks as a concept were founded by the work of Jo Boaler. These math sessions are short mathematical conversations which allow students to explore number sense, mathematical language, the talk moves and creativity in thinking and exploring the world. Number talks have multiple entry points to cater to a range of student ability and knowledge. They can be used as maths warm ups or mini workshop lessons. During this session you will learn how to facilitate a number talk while igniting a passion for maths within every student (and their teacher).

Sarah has taught students from years zero to eight giving her a sound knowledge of the New Zealand Curriculum. She has held school wide responsibility roles such as Te Reo Maori, Kapa Haka, Well-being and culture and PB4L. Sarah has a post-graduate Certificate in Educative Mentorship and is passionate about providing PCT's with a positive mentorship program that strengthens their teaching pedagogy and helps them navigate the various facets of teaching.
