Mindfulness Practices: Improving attention, mental resilience and self-regulation for teachers and students with Rita Riccola

There are well-established links between positive mental health, social and emotional competence, and academic achievement. In today’s education environment the demands on teachers and students is high and self-management is a priority. This course provides practices and techniques to teach and guide others to develop mindfulness. It is based on the successful programme Mindful NZ Schools. The concept has developed out of the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD, who is internationally known as a scientist, writer, and meditation teacher engaged in bringing mindfulness into the mainstream.

Studies in education have shown that teachers who participate in mindfulness training report they have become more alert and attentive, less reactive, less judgemental, and more patient (Schoeberlein & Koffler, 2005). Students state mindfulness develops the ability to let go of distressing thoughts and feelings (Broderick & Metz, 2009).

This session is interactive and engages participants in recognising when and how to use and teach the techniques. Written documentation, a mindfulness teaching manual and lesson plan examples are also provided.

Rita Riccola is a registered NZ Teacher and a trained Mindfulness teacher with 25 years experience who has completed courses with Mindful Schools USA, attended many silent retreats and completed ACT training. She has provided training for schools in Auckland and trained teachers at Diocesan School for Girls and Dilworth Junior College.
