Teaching fractions, proportions and ratios

This course is designed to guide teachers in their understanding and teaching of fractions, decimal fractions, percentages, proportions and ratios. 

It will build on the basic understanding of fractions and decimal fractions, and move to proportional thinking when working with ratios and percentages.

At the completion of the course, participants will:

  • Understand the progressive strategy stages of fractions, decimal fractions, percentages and ratios
  • Have increased content knowledge of fractions, decimal fractions, percentages and ratios
  • Be confident in ways of teaching that attempt to eliminate misconceptions and make it easier for students to gain understanding
  • Have knowledge of key ideas, equipment and activities used to teach both knowledge and strategy in the various domains.

Jill Smythe is an experienced practitioner with experience as a classroom teacher in primary and intermediate. She was a maths professional learning and development facilitator for more than 10 years with Team Solutions and a professional teaching fellow at the Faculty of Education, University of Auckland. Jill worked with the Ministry of Education on developing the Accelerated Learning in Maths (ALIM). Her expertise is in building pedagogical content knowledge of teachers so they can affect more of a change in the understanding of concepts and learning of their students.
