A Teacher's Survival Guide to Phonics and Spelling

Projects and programmes Waikato

Posted: 05 February 2020
Notice reference #: 1HA57f

Simply Phonics is a fully planned phonics programme integrating oral language, spelling patterns, phonics, writing and reading.

The Simply Phonics Model highlights the fact that there is an incremental sequence for teaching phonics. Phonics only adds value to children's spelling when their teachers are super confident and knowledgeable in all areas of phonics.

One of the most robust findings of modern literacy research is that proficient reading and spelling is strongly associated with the ability to identify, remember, sequence, and apply, phonemes. Louisa Moats, 2000

A significant barrier for whole school teaching of phonics and spelling is the gap between teachers' self-efficacy in this area, and their actual knowledge. Research conducted by Dyslexia Research UK.

By the end of the 2 days all teachers will leave with a significant boost in their knowledge, passion and skills in teaching phonics.
