Science and STEM: An integrated approach in primary and intermediate classrooms with Nick Bithell

The session aims to boost teacher confidence by developing understanding of how to further explore the science curriculum with your students. Participants will access engaging activities and approaches for science and STEM to integrate learning into the classroom.

The session will initially explore scientific literacy and understanding science in the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC). Activities and simulations which demonstrate how Nature of Science (NoS) can work within your practice, will be shared. Time will be given to examining activity resources and participants will collaboratively plan for their use within their own contexts.
STEM activities and resource sharing will be encouraged.

At the completion of the course participants will be able to:

  • Use science in the New Zealand Curriculum to plan engaging teaching and learning activities
  • Confidently deliver learning activities which develop students science understanding, capabilities and stimulate critical thinking
  • Run simple STEM activities, understanding how to make them successful in a primary school classroom.

Nick has over 20 years of teaching experience specialising in science and STEM education. He is a Ministry of Education accredited professional learning development facilitator and is passionate about working with educators to create engaging experiences for learners and to build teachers and schools capacity in the areas of science and STEM.
