Created by Nelson-based Plink Software, Tipu is a language app that uses gamification and customisation to make learning te reo Māori easy, convenient and fun both in and out of the classroom.
Tēnā koutou katoa.
Tipu was released more than three years ago and in that time it has taught someone a new word or sentence structure, every two and a half minutes of every hour, of every day – that’s a total of more than half a million words and sentence structures!
In 2017, Tipu was recognised as a finalist in the Excellence in Social Innovation category at the New Zealand Innovation Awards and went one better to receive highly commended in the Innovation in Māori Development category.
Tipu in Schools allows teachers and parents to login to an online portal to follow the progress of their tamariki. Tamariki can access Tipu through any computer, tablet or device.
Online learning is supplemented with real-world flash cards and flip charts, providing an opportunity to transfer learning from the app into real world conversational situations.
Tipu focuses on teaching sentence patterns, which allows learners to substitute in different nouns, verbs and adjectives to utilise te reo in a variety of situations. It also has audio to help with pronunciation of words and sentences.
Plink is passionate about providing resources that connect Māori with their language and its cultural context, to strengthen personal sense of identity.
The opportunity to help all young Kiwis to learn the language is something that we find extremely exciting.
If you would like to see Tipu in action and have a kōrero about using it in your school, call Melissa on (021) 125 5373 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
