Innovative Young Minds (IYM) is 2, week-long STEM programmes for female students in Y11–12 at school. There are 40 places available each week. Held in Wellington in the first and second week of the July school holidays, students from all around New Zealand can apply to attend.
Women are underrepresented in the STEM sector and we know that diversity brings more creativity, greater innovation to problem solving and increased economic success. IYM aims to inspire young women by showing them the opportunities a study and career pathway in STEM can offer them. We want them to consider the possibilities of a career that may not exist yet!
The programme introduces young women to a wide variety of STEM pathways. During the week, students visit businesses, tertiary institutes and Crown Research Institutes. They hear from women in the STEM sector, learn to network, visit Parliament and complete an innovation challenge.
