Person Responsible Consultation ECE

Official notices

Posted: 07 October 2019
Notice reference #: 1HA0AD

The Ministry of Education has started consultation on 2 proposals aimed at easing teacher supply pressure on licensed ECE centres.

All licensed early learning services need at least one person responsible for every 50 children in attendance. In ECE centres, they are the person primarily responsible for the day-to-day education and care of children.

Currently, only teachers with a recognised ECE qualification can be a person responsible in teacher-led ECE centres.

The Ministry would like to hear views about 2 proposed options to change the Education (Early Childhood Services) Regulations, which would allow primary qualified teachers to be a person responsible in ECE centres.

The first proposal would allow primary qualified teachers to be a person responsible for the first and last 90 minutes of licensed hours at ECE centres.

The other proposal would allow primary qualified teachers to be a person responsible at all times.

You can read more about the proposals in the person responsible discussion document and complete a short survey at https://consultation.education.govt.nz/ece/person-responsible-in-ece/
