Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) is 23–29 September and the theme is Explore your way to wellbeing – Whāia te ara hauora, Whitiora.

For the first time and after plenty of feedback, MHAW will be held in the school term in 2019.

New Zealand schools and kura are encouraged to help their tauira/students to explore their way to wellbeing by taking notice of the things that make them feel good – and do more of them!

MHAW 2019 is inspired by Te Whare Tapa Whā, a Māori perspective on wellbeing developed by leading Māori health advocate and researcher Sir Mason Durie. Te Whare Tapa Whā helps to identify where we need extra support.

Over MHAW schools will be given the tools to explore each part of the wharenui and give practical ideas for how they can strengthen the wellbeing of their tauira to create a school environment where it’s safe and okay to talk about mental health.

There are plenty of great activities and resources on offer for schools in 2019:

  • There are 23 fun MHAW classroom activities created by Sparklers. The activities have wellbeing themes and some align with Te Whare Tapa Whā.
  • The MHAW Colouring Competition is back. Tamariki can get creative and go in the draw to win a prize – more details can be found here.
  • There is a MHAW Mindful Colouring activity. Mindful colouring can help to lower stress and anxiety, increase focus, and promote mindfulness. Perfect for the classroom, staffroom or at home.
  • The MHAW school page has free downloadable resources including posters, an explore guide, a wellbeing plan template and more.
  • There are a Good Reads – Youth and Children where books with wellbeing themes are reviewed by people in the sector.
