Many schools are reporting a significant increase in the number of angry and aggressive students who attend school.

This webinar will look at some of the underlying causes of this behaviour as well as practical strategies to deescalate a tense situation.

What you'll learn

  • Be able to identify when someone is becoming agitated or distressed. (This may not be obvious until there is an explosive outburst)
  • Be able to deescalate a situation before it gets worse.
  • Learn words that aggravate a situation and words that can help to calm someone down.
  • Understand the underlying causes of aggression in young people.

Target audience

Anyone who works with young people in any school setting. There is a mixture of introductory and advanced knowledge.

When: Tuesday 8 October at 3.30pm.

Duration: 1 hour.

About the presenter

Michael Hempseed is the author of Being A True Hero: Understanding and Preventing Suicide in Your Community. The book is being used by the New Zealand Police, Fire and Emergency NZ, GPs, counselors as well as many parents and teachers. Michael gained an honours degree in psychology from the University of Canterbury in 2008. In 2016 he spoke at TEDx.
