Collaborative Philosophical Inquiry (Two-day Introductory Workshops)
These practical and experiential workshops show how to bring together - in one student-led practice - critical thinking, community building, and the exploration of central concepts that permeate human life. Truth, knowledge, rights, friendship, beauty, goodness, responsibility, possibility, language, reason, freedom, identity, justice... all of these are vitally important to us, and many questions about them cannot be fully settled by science, but must be explored and evaluated using creative and critical inquiry.
Engaging students in collaborative inquiry into their own questions about these concepts not only builds higher level thinking skills but also fosters community between diverse students, and develops dispositions and values essential for citizenship. (International research has also shown that it has a significant impact on reading and maths!)
Philosophy for Children New Zealand (P4CNZ) offers professional development to teachers who want to stimulate and empower their students, and enhance their own practice, through engagement in philosophical 'communities of inquiry'.
These introductory workshops are suitable for teachers of both primary and secondary students. The content of the workshops has been approved by the Federation of Australasian Philosophy in Schools Associations, and the facilitators are trained and highly experienced classroom practitioners and philosophers.
